A MARCoNS nasal swab is a diagnostic test used to detect a specific type of bacteria in the nose called MARCoNS, which stands for Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Coagulase Negative Staphylococci.
MARCoNS are strains of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus bacteria that:
Live in the nasal passages
Are resistant to multiple antibiotics
Can form biofilms (protective layers that make them harder to eliminate)
They’re commonly discussed in functional medicine, especially in patients with:
Chronic inflammatory conditions
Mold exposure
Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS)
Persistent sinus issues
